Amen to that. I wish someone on the Russian side would take this problem more seriously. I also miss some of the cool old stuff... light sabers, etc. ... that was in it many versions ago. They took it all out, but I always thought they should have kept it in at the player's choice in the options menu. Some of that was a little silly, but some of us like silly, and Fallout NV had an option to allow that kind of thing, which worked out beautifully.

Anyway, +1.

I'm playing the current version... no additional mods, nothing weird... and I can't proceed in my current game because it crashes during the enemy turn. This is consistent, and happens every time.

I can provide a save file if you tell me whom to send it to.

Any ideas on what causes crashes during the enemy turn?

I too have found that disabling the "Smart AI" does nothing. The enemy still shows up with level 30 heroes and upgraded level 30 troops by turn 60 which is, I'm sorry, just impossible. It's not "Smart" - it's out-and-out cheating. Yes, we understand that there are a few gimmicks you can abuse to take down armies at that level, but that's just no FUN.

For years of playing Eador, the fun has been playing smart and using what you have to beat an equal enemy. Now it's just all cranked up to you-have-to-use-this-one-strategy which makes the game much, much less interesting.

I wish the "disable smart AI" feature actually worked...

I love the new changes! The Elves are now quite excellent. The two useless Tier 2 units have been replaced with new, awesome ones. I particularly like the Skinshifters! And now that we can disable the cheating AI, the game feels playable again!

The only issue I've seen so far is that the artifact/item descriptions are all in Russian. Any chance of a translation?

Any news on the shaman totem bug? It's really, really frustrating to not even be able to take on a single orc shaman without the threat of a crash to desktop hanging over my head. I just had one crash on the second turn of combat when a totem tried to cast stone spikes.

That whole totem thing has been a massive pain from the day it was introduced. It seemed to have been fixed, but now it's broken again.

Oh, and a commonly-encountered text bug...

When you do the diplomatic "My master gathers an army against the darkness" thing in a Holy Land province, the reply contains the sentence:

"We know that he punishes heresy just as we are, and our blessed land will knows his encouragement and support".

The "punishes just as we are" and "land will knows" are problematic.

How about "We know that he punishes heresy just as we do, and our blessed land will offer him encouragement and support"?

I don't know if this is a known issue, but the Orc totem bug seems to remain. I thought it was fixed, but it's definitely still there.

I can get a replicable crash when facing a number of orc shamans. I crashed my game several times on the same fight (thus killing my score, since the game counted all of those crashes as reversions).

It seems bound to totems reaching a certain high level through shamans boosting/healing them, though it's hard to imagine that something so straightforward wouldn't have been fixed.

Thank you, Boon. I already do that; as soon as a new version comes out, I mod the Magister line to Neutral (because that seems to fit with the lore and makes them usable for both good and evil builds) and the Black Unicorns to Way Evil.

But the thing about the Black Unicorn's alignment was incidental. My main question had to do with the loot tables. It's a bigger problem that Black Unicorns give essentially no treasure than that they're not evil.

Anyone know how the loot tables work? I feel like the Black Unicorn's has to be wrong, but I can't prove it because I don't know what the loot variables in the var folder mean.

So after losing nearly an entire leveled army taking out 1 Black Unicorn and getting nothing but 50 gold and common arrows in return, I've come to the conclusion that some of the loot tables contain some serious errors.

Usually, the loot tables look something like (665, 2), though some units have 2 sets of those 2 values per level. Some units have different values for every level, and some have something for level 1 and then after it it's a bunch of (0,0) values for every level above that.

Can someone explain what those values mean?

I would also like to remind the devs that having a Black Unicorn be of Neutral alignment makes absolutely no freaking sense. They're as evil as it gets; their description makes that really, really clear. That's GOT TO BE A MISTAKE. One of the devs even admitted it was, so can't we change it already?

I think that Sorcerers can upgrade to both Necromancers and Demonologists, so perhaps Monks aren't alone in having 2 upgrade paths.

And thank you very much for the description! I understand completely now.

I still feel like enemies are leveling insanely fast. On my game yesterday, on turn 40 the enemy came thundering over the horizon with 3 level 20 heroes complete with level 30+ troops. That's just insane.

It happens almost every time now, and I really feel like it's killing the game's fun for me. I'm all for a challenge, but I can't have a nice experience if I'm almost getting flattened every single second and have to constantly rewind just to stay alive.

I hate it when the words of macho braggarts who probably aren't even all that good convince the devs to up the difficulty. It happens in a lot of games, and it's pretty much always a mistake. I'm actually happy about the new AI, which makes battles much more interesting, but the insane leveling thing is almost a game-killer for me. There is just no way to get 3 heroes to level 20 and all of their units to upgrade10+ in fewer than 40 turns. If there is, someone please post a video of it.

I ran into something I don't understand in the patch notes:

"Almost all of the fighters with improvements (with a couple of exceptions) can now be promoted by manually reaching a certain level. Probability does not depend on randomness. To increase the display of the warrior, click the arrow when it turns yellow. The right response to this arrow will give you the necessary information about the requirements for the promotion of the fighter. "

It sounds like this is saying that units will automatically have a .5-up transformation option at certain levels instead of randomly past a certain level (which is awesome) but I can't understand the last two sentences. It sounds like there is some way now to get information about promotion requirements on a unit by unit basis, but I can't find it in the game. What is this "click the arrow when it turns yellow" thing? What is the "right response"? Can someone explain this?

There's no need to keep defending this, Darrel. All of those things you mentioned are most certainly not the cause. The fact that the computer gets a few things like alliances handed to them has nothing to do with this massive and crippling bug.

This is now a known issue, it is a bug, and it never happened prior to a certain update to New Horizons. I've been playing vanilla and NH for years and years, and this never happened until several months ago or thereabouts, and since then many other people have reported it.

This is a New Horizons issue, and hopefully it will be fixed soon, but don't even begin to try to justify it. It only muddles the issue and might prevent the devs from thinking it's a real bug, which it is, and so massive that I can't play the game I've been playing for years and years because I'm tired of an impossibly supercharged opponent crushing the entire map on turn 40.

Also, no offense, but the word in English is "quest", as in "request", not "qwest". It looks a little silly when you write it like that, at least to me, and probably to most native speakers.

Thanks, Boon947! We all love your hard work. Even if the forums haven't been hopping lately, people are still playing this. It's been quite a while since the last version; we're waiting on the new one with bated breath.

By the way, I was playing through the campaign again and couldn't read through the evil Ancient guy's diary after getting rid of him - too much text and no scrollbar. It was a month or so ago, so I don't remember any precise verbiage - I think they all referred to "the machine" in the text. Just noting. I'll write it down if I see another example of needs-scrollbar. Just mentioning.

There is no reward from exploring that causes your hero to be level 30 on turn 50, or to have a massive army of 30-th-level 2.5 units.

It cannot possibly be that. This is a leveling bug which has been present for a while.

I've been playing the campaign recently, and I'm about 2/3 of the way through at the moment. It's not very fun to play anymore, though, because there is something simply broken about how the enemy AI is leveling up.

On turn 40... 40, you understand... the enemy always comes thundering over the horizon with 3 lv. 20-30 heroes with FULLY LEVELED armies of 30th level 1.5 and 2.5 units. I played all the way through the MotBW campaign and nothing vaguely like that happened even once. It would be more like turn 200 when I would see an army of 30th level fully promoted units led by a 30th level hero come against me. The AI I'm playing against is Master difficulty, which is supposed to be like me playing on Competent, but come on, let's be honest... unless I'm really, really missing something here, having a near-30th level hero and an army of 40-60 lv. units in just 40 turns is just seriously, seriously wrong. If I'm lucky enough to have a map which allows me to battle with my first hero for, say, 35 out of those 40 first turns (you always lose at least a few due to movement, of course, or exploration) my hero's level is around 15 or so, and that's doing nothing but fighting almost every turn for 40 turns, including against pretty powerful enemies. The most I've ever gotten is close up to 20 by turn 40, and that was with insane luck and taking a lot of chances, and few soldiers survived with me, maybe one or two promoted to 1.5, but not 30th level 1.5 by any means. That's just flat impossible.

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, and I know that everybody wants to wave their genitals around and brag about how completely awesome they are and how easy the game is, but I've played thousands of hours of Eador and it's never been like this. I heard that a relatively recent patch fixed an issue which was causing the AI to level up too fast, and I was so happy to hear it, but I didn't start a new game, just continued on with the campaign, and if massive fully-leveled multiple armies showing up in the 40s of turns is a fixed leveling system then I'm Marilyn Monroe.

Anybody else having this issue playing against the AI? Is there a way to fix it? I swear something's wrong here. I can usually be victorious anyway by kiting the AI for dozens of turns and pulling some really tricky stuff, but it's just not fun. Part of the joy of Eador is getting at least a few dozen turns of peaceful expansion and exploration, and when the AI is that stupidly powerful it makes the game not at all fun.

Of course, everyone can have their own opinions on this, but personally...

Like most proposed changes, adding it as an option in the game setup sounds like a fine idea. I admit, I'd enjoy starting out with a gnoll alliance (or whatever) and building my armies from the ground up on their abilities, or try out a race that I haven't played in over a year due to chance. Making it a normal part of the game is, I think, a bad idea - part of the fun is discovering the lay of the land, whom you're near, etc. and the variety of alliance created by those chance factors is a positive.

So thumbs up for adding it as an option, thumbs down on making it the standard. That's my take.
